*Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, who had played important roles in the formation of the United States, died on July 4, 1826.

*James Monroe, our fifth president, died on July 4, 1831.

*Calvin Coolidge, our thirtieth president, was born on July 4, 1872.

*Not a single signature was appended to the Declaration on July 4. While most of the fifty-six signatures were in place by early August, one signer, Thomas McKean, did not sign until 1781.

*The first official July 4th celebration, as affirmed by a legislative act, was held in Massachusetts in 1781.

*Whitechapel Foundry, who cast the Liberty Bell in 1751, also produced the Great Bell of Westminster, also known as "Big Ben," and as important a symbol to the British as the Liberty Bell is to Americans.
